Bio: Silas is a young albino character in Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code, hailing from Marseille and who happens to be very religious. His book and movie personas focus solely on his involvement with Opus Dei and the fictional plot to uncover the Da Vinci Code, leading him to murder several people and eventually commit suicide by cop: I plan to play Silas pre-canon for the time being and explore what motivations led him to that, taking into account the canon abusive background Silas came from. That said, what follows is less a biographical account for Silas--that can be found on wikipedia and does a far better job at encapsulating his role in the story than I do in a page or less--and will be more a list of FAQs, so to speak. Albinism is not an overly common diagnosis, and some things that are readily noticeable do not translate well to text. So for the record, Silas has the following to some degree:

-Oculocutaneous albinism type 1 (OCA1 or tyrosinase-related albinism) results from a genetic defect in an enzyme called tyrosinase. This enzyme helps the body to change the amino acid tyrosine into pigment. (An amino acid is a “building block” of protein.) There are two subtypes of OCA1. In OCA1A--what Silas' manifestation is in medical terms--the enzyme is inactive and no melanin is produced, leading to white hair and very light skin.

-Photophobia: sensitivity to bright light and glare.

- The iris, the colored area in the center of the eye, has little to no pigment to screen out stray light coming into the eye. (Light normally enters the eye only through the pupil, the dark opening in the center of the iris, but in albinism light can pass through the iris as well.) People with albinism are sensitive to glare, but they do not prefer to be in the dark, and they need light to see just like anyone else. Sunglasses or tinted contact lenses help outdoors. Indoors, it is important to place lights for reading or close work over a shoulder rather than in front.

For the purposes of interaction with other canons: Silas' world, having been written as modern-day Earth, lends itself to having several different permutations put into it as a crutch of sorts for RP, and I intend to take full advantage of that in communities outside Milliways.

RP journal for AU Silas from the Da Vinci Code, property of Ron Howard and Columbia Pictures. He is played as a young adult and is still an albino and very religious, but is not a member of Opus Dei. As a note, his younger icons do not look like an albino PB: that would be because they're not and albino PBs are damn near impossible to find. Silas is here portrayed by Mitch Hewer and Paul Bettany, both of whom I do not own. This journal appears here for the purpose of roleplaying in milliways_bar and others; no profit is made.
